ENGLAND and Manchester United footballing legend Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86.
The news was announced on Saturday, October 21, with tributes and messages pouring in worldwide for the sporting icon.
Sir Bobby Charlton won 106 caps for England and scored 49 international goals - both one-time records for his country, winning the World Cup in 1966.
He visited Colchester in July 1981 to officially open Colchester Building Society’s new offices in North Station Road.
Sir Bob Russell, former Colchester MP, said: “He was invited to open the Society’s head office because he had a savings account with the Colchester Society – via an agency based in Manchester.
“The offices closed following the merger of the Colchester Society with the Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society.
“Later it became offices of a company called 'Seatrade'. Two years ago the building, still known as 'Seatrade House', was converted into 27 flats.”
Sir Bobby Charlton also came to Layer Road as manager of Preston North-End as his playing career came to an end.
U's fan Sir Bob Russell added: “He did not play in that match against Colchester United which was a pity.
“I once saw him play for Manchester United against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.”
