REMEMBRANCE Sunday may have come and gone, but a Colchester care home now has a lasting reminder of the poignant day for years to come.

While Colchester came together as a city to celebrate Remembrance Sunday, St Fillans Care Home, in St Fillan Road, made their own special memories from the day.

Relatives of residents at the home knit and crocheted more than 300 poppies for the site's impressive Remembrance Sunday display.

A crocheted 'Tommy', designed to resemble a soldier, was even donated to the remarkable feature for the home to showcase in the years to come.

Grant Muir, lifestyle coordinator at St Fillans, said: “We had five relatives knitting and crocheting the poppy for us, we didn’t expect to receive over 300.

“We had someone come in from the Boxted Methodist Silver Band. For the last five years, she’s played The Last Post for us. It was beautiful.

“Her name’s Yo, her relative lived here and sadly passed away. She gave up her time, free of charge.

“We lit the candle and had a two minute silence.

“A lot of our residents are evacuees, we reminisced on their past. Although they have dementia, a lot of our residents were able to reminisce and remember.

“We were extremely touched by how many poppies we had received.

“We extend our gratitude to the five people who gave up their evenings to do the knitting and crocheting.”
