A NATURE reserve owned by Colchester Zoo’s Action For The Wild charity has welcomed some exciting new additions.
The UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve is located in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, and has been developed by Action For The Wild since 2005.
On November 2, the reserve welcomed a gang of African Buffalo to its surroundings.
The group includes four bulls - one of them being a dominant bull - and 12 females.
Rebecca Moore, Colchester Zoo's zoological director, said: "The arrival of a herd of buffalo onto the UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve is an exciting time for Colchester Zoo and the team on the reserve, representing a number of years of hard work ensuring the appropriate fencing and permit approvals were met.
"Since their release, they have remained somewhat elusive with only the bulls seen so far, however, as we come into breeding season, we hope to also have a number of calves born soon.
"Once the herd grows in confidence, we are sure they will be a regular, majestic sighting on the reserve and will play an important role in the ecosystem keeping the grass levels maintained and turning over the soil."
