RESIDENTS in a quiet Colchester road have said they are "too scared" to leave their own homes through fear of being confronted by drug dealers and lawless crooks.

Queen Mary Avenue, off Berechurch Road, is reported to have become a hotbed for anti-social behaviour and crime, much to the concern of homeowners and tenants.

One resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, has said they are currently living in fear and worried what could happen if they were to get on the wrong side of the road's troublemakers.

As well as reports of drug dealing in the area, some residents are said to have been threatened with a large dog.

“I’m not happy as we have a problem with anti-social behaviour and drug addicts on this road," said the resident.

“My only lifeline is my dog and I enjoy taking them out for walks but I’m scared to go out, as there is a dog which is constantly jumping up at people.

“They are a nasty piece of work and I just keep out of their way."

The resident also claims they have had drug addicts peer through their window while attempting to enjoy breakfast in the early mornings on several different occasions.

Bosses at Colchester Borough Homes have now stated the council is aware of anti-social reports in Queen Mary Avenue.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of instances of anti-social behaviour in that area, and our anti-social behaviour team are working with the police to ensure the appropriate enforcement action is taken.

“If local residents have any information relating to crime or anti-social behaviour, please report it to Colchester Borough Homes using the information available on our website and to the police.”

The latest concerns come after recent data revealed anti-social behaviour is down in Colchester by 37 per cent, while all crime is down by eight per cent.

A meeting was also held in August this year to discuss anti-social behaviour in the city's centre, which addressed issues such as masked youths terrorising shop workers and acting aggressively to passers-by.
