ESSEX Highways has said "redundant" road markings in Colchester's Station Way will be removed this week as the authority continues work on a new cycle lane.
The route has been the subject of criticism since it was laid out by Essex County Council as part of the authority’s 'Safer, Greener, Healthier' travel initiative.
The lane was first set up in 2020, and it was announced earlier this year it would be made permanent.
Last week, Sir Bob Russell said the lane was “a death trap”, citing a confusing layout which he said could lead to cyclists and buses careering headlong into one another.
Colchester Cycling Campaign also expressed reservations about the set-up, admitting it was “not ideal”.
Essex Highways has now said some of the road markings in Station Way are now redundant and will be replaced this week, although the authority did not specify when.
A spokesman for the council said: “Some of the markings shown in the pictures are from the previous layout and are now redundant.
“These will be permanently removed this week and have been painted over in the interim.
“Northbound cyclists should use the shared footway/cycleway facility past the bus stop to join the segregated facility under the bridge.”
