A HISTORIC city centre venue is set to open its doors this festive season to give guests a very special and "magical" Christmas treat.
Colchester Castle is preparing to welcome in residents and visitors to the city as part of a seasonal event boasting Christmas carols, entertainment and the chance to meet Santa.
Entrance to the castle is completely free, although the Santa meet-and-greet and gift will cost £5.
Colchester Council’s portfolio holder for leisure Michelle Burrows said: “Christmas is a magical time at Colchester Castle.
“It has a charming festive ambience at this time of the year making it a great choice to take the family over the holidays.
“The annual free open evening is a particularly exciting event – where everyone can have the opportunity to visit Colchester’s historic landmark for free.
“The whole castle is buzzing with yuletide spirit – it’s one not to be missed.”
Visitors will also get the chance to see stunning exhibition Gladiators: A Day at the Roman Games before it closes on January 14.
The annual Colchester Castle Christmas Open Evening will take place on Wednesday, December 6, from 3pm to 8.30pm.
