A COLCHESTER antiques shop is set to appear in an episode of a long-running BBC programme after inviting in camera crews and TV stars.
The Shoulder of Mutton, in Halstead Road, will feature in an episode of Antiques Road Trip, which has been shown on BBC One since 2013.
The business was first contacted about possible filming dates in August and during filming they closed down for the whole day.
Filming lasted just a single day, with customers who were unaware of the plans finding themselves as unintentional background extras in the episode.
The Antiques Road Trip format sees two experts compete against each other with a budget to buy items for auction.
On this occasion, auctioneer and television presenter Philip Serrell visited The Shoulder of Mutton, arriving not knowing what he would be leaving with.
Sam Neill was on hand to greet Philip, show him around the shop, pitch items and tell him about the history.
Manager Amy Neill said Philip was impressed with what the Shoulder of Mutton had to offer.
She said: “He said he’d been to antiques centres around the UK constantly - and said Shoulder of Mutton was one of the best he’d been in for a long time.”
Due to signing non-disclosure agreements, Amy is unable to disclose what item Philip bought or how well it did at auction before the episode airs.
However, she has praised the production, Philip and the overall atmosphere while the episode was being filmed.
Amy said: “It was really fun and really exciting and just a pleasurable experience to work with the BBC.
“It was a really nice time. The camera crew love to film it and film it with him. They just love to laugh. It was a really pleasurable experience.”
In 2021, filming also took place at The Shoulder of Mutton for Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.
Countdown star Rachel Riley featured in the episode, alongside antiques expert David Harper.
The episode featuring The Shoulder of Mutton will be aired next Friday.
