A NEW outdoor adventure playground has opened to families at a popular Colchester beauty spot.
Colchester Council has announced the official opening of its new adventure playground at High Woods Country Park.
The decision to replace the old playground stemmed from the recognition that it had come to the end of its natural life.
The previous structure had served its purpose for just over a decade and was closed in January 2023.
Plans were first revealed for the site back in April, with a number of new designs put forward featuring climbing frames, swings, balance beams and Ninja-themed items.
Four entries were shortlisted, and the designs were put on display at the High Woods Country Park Visitor Centre.
Residents and park visitors then voted for their favourite design, with the council saying this was to “ensure the playground meets the preferences and needs of the diverse user base”.
Now, the new playground has been officially opened following a formal unveiling by councillor Martin Goss on Thursday.
The playground, designed and installed by Kompan Ltd, is the result of a £130,000 investment, funded by developers' Section 106 contributions.
Colchester Council says the new playground incorporates “advancements in design and inclusivity”.
The equipment used in the new playground is designed to enable everyone to play together.
Notable additions to enhance accessibility include a pathway leading around the playground and additional rubber-bonded surfaces.
It offers an exciting and inclusive play experience for children up to 12 years old.
On the opening, councillor Goss said: "The investment in improved play facilities at High Woods Country Park is a testament to our commitment to the health and well-being of our community, especially our children.
“The playground is a fantastic addition to our beloved park, and I encourage everyone to come out and experience the fun it has to offer.”
High Woods Country Park is open seven days a week throughout the year and has 17 pedestrian entrances which are never locked.
The visitor car park is open from 7.30am to 7pm in winter and extends hours to 10pm in the summer.
