MOTORISTS were left "scared their cars might be T-boned" after traffic lights reportedly stopped working for three days at a busy junction in Colchester.

Traffic lights at the crossroads between Circular Road, Pownall Crescent, and Berechurch Road malfunctioned over the weekend.

On the first day of the outage, before signage had been installed, drivers were left unsure as to how they should approach the junction.

By day two of the lights not working, however, once signs had been put in place, motorists were instructed to slow down.

During busier times throughout the day, meanwhile, cars had to wait longer than usual to pass through.

One concerned motorist said: "I didn't feel safe approaching the crossroads as I have seen the speed of which some cars come out of certain roads.

"I was scared that my car might have been T-boned."

The lights have since been fixed but this is not the first time the traffic signals have stopped working this year.

Last week another traffic lights issue proved a concern for motorists elsewhere in the road.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “With a network as big as ours, we rely on the public to report issues across the county.

"These can be reported through our online ‘tell us’ tool at essexhighways.org/tell-us or by calling 0345 758 5592 if there is a risk to safety.

“Once something is reported to us, it will be assessed by an inspector and a repair will be scheduled in accordance with our maintenance strategy.

"It is not possible to undertake all repairs instantaneously as soon as we receive a report of an issue.

“This issue with the traffic lights at the junction of Pownall Crescent and Berechurch Road has now been fixed.”
