PRIMARY schools throughout Colchester have been ranked in order of performance – following new data from the UK government.
Colchester’s primary schools have been listed in data released by the Department For Education which analyses how key stage two pupils have performed between 2022 to 2023.
The table has been compiled by the schools with the highest percentage of pupils meeting the “expected standard”.
This standard is met by key stage two pupils at the end of this phase achieving a score of 100 or more in their reading and maths tests.
It also considers that their teacher’s assessment is as expected or better when it comes to writing skills.
St Thomas More’s Catholic Primary School, in Priory Street, Colchester, has ranked as the highest school in Colchester with a score of 93 per cent, with a “well above average” for reading and maths.
Bridget Harris, headteacher at the school, which also ranked the second highest in the Essex table, is delighted with the score.
She said: 'We are very proud of all the hard work the children, staff and parents have put in to closing the gaps in learning after all the disruption caused to education in recent years.
“Like many other schools we have had to adapt our teaching to meet the varying needs of the pupils and we are so pleased with the results achieved.
“It was important to us that children continued to experience a wider curriculum which included performances throughout the year, the arts, trips and residentials as well as the National Curriculum.”
Birch Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, in School Hill, came in as the second highest in the Colchester table which includes 72 schools in total.
It achieved 91 per cent in terms of its pupils meeting the standard and gained an “average” rating across reading, writing, and maths.
Rebekah May is the school's head teacher and has first hand experience having previously taught its year six students prior to her current position.
She said: “We are so proud of them for their achievements in their Sats but even more proud of who they are, their kindness and their leadership that they demonstrated in so many ways in their year six at Birch Primary School.
“Our children transfer to a huge variety of local schools and continue to make us proud in their onward journey.”
An earlier version of this article included a table which had incorrect figures for St George's School and Myland School due to a formatting error. These have now been corrected. We apologise for this error.
Following that, the next highest rated schools were Langenhoe Community Primary School, Alresford Primary School, Kelvdeon St Mary’s Church of England Primary Academy, and St George’s Church of England Primary School, in Great Bromley.
On the other end of the stable there were four schools with a zero per cent rating, however, they are all listed as special education institutions.
This is then followed by Baynards Primary School, in Tiptree, with 27 per cent, Unity Primary Academy with 36 per cent, and Roach Vale Primary School earned a 37 per cent score.
