FORMER Colchester United favourite Perry Groves says it is vital that his old club stick together ahead of a busy festive period.

The U's head into their home clash with Salford City tomorrow night desperate for a win to move away from the relegation zone.

Colchester lie a place above the League Two drop zone after a five-game losing run, leading to supporter disgruntlement.

The U's slump in form has led to some criticism of chairman Robbie Cowling and head coach Matty Etherington, from some fans.

However, Groves, who emerged through the Layer Road ranks before making a big money switch to Arsenal in 1986, says unity is vital at Colchester, ahead of a hectic run of games.

Groves said: “I know the owner Robbie, I know members of the coaching staff there, Steve Ball is a good friend of mine.

“I know there is a lot of people there with the best interests of Colchester United at heart.

“They are not there for ego nor for them to get praise from the fans; I know there is a core of people which just want the best for Colchester United.

“All they must do, the fans, manager Matthew Etherington, the players, is all come together, especially over this Christmas period where games are coming thick and fast."

Groves made more than 150 league appearances for Colchester, during his six seasons playing for the first team.

The former Arsenal winger is confident his old club can pull away from danger but has stressed that every player must be giving their all.

“When you are down at the bottom, your confidence can ebb away, so every player has to give 100 per cent effort, it’s the minimum requirement," added Groves, who twice won the league title during his time at Arsenal.

“When you are down at the bottom, you have to win your 50/50s, duals, and battles.

“I have no doubt they will find themselves moving up the table.”
