THOUSANDS of 999 calls were made to Essex Police in the days leading up to Christmas, new figures have revealed. 

Between Friday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 26, police received a total of 4,500 emergency calls with reports of various different offences. 

These ranged from burglaries, domestic disputes, concerns for safety and sudden deaths to reports of high-risk missing people, anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, and assaults.

Concerns were also raised about poor and dangerous driving across the county.
