Colchester residents on what makes them proud of city

After all, our great city not only boasts a rich history, but also diverse food options, a vibrant culture and a close-knit community.

With that in mind, we recently prompted Gazette readers to share precisely what makes them most proud to live in the area.

Clearly the question struck a chord - or at least the more than 150 comments we received would suggest so. 

Here we have picked out some of our favourite responses.

'Top fan' Melissa Hieatt said: "I love the history of Colchester and I'm a proud resident having lived here for 25 years.

"We have beautiful countryside all around us and the sea within 15 minutes from the city."

Responding, Chantale Saiz, a resident of 34 years, added: "I couldn't agree more."

The food scene in the city also came under high praise.

Rebel Deetz spoke fondly of the abundance of vegan-friendly offerings, stating: "I love the selection of good vegan food" before highlighting other beloved aspects of the city, including its parks, theatres, museums, and galleries.

Others, such as Allen Salter, acknowledged the city was superior to other areas they had lived in, describing Colchester as simply: "The best place I've ever lived."

Alison Finch added: "We have the best neighbours either of us have ever had."

Colchester's rich history ensured it wasn't overlooked in the discussion either.

Various cultural landmarks including Colchester Castle, High Woods Country Park, the Firstsite gallery, and Colchester Arts Centre were noted as sources of pride for locals, according to comments from Caroline Bishop and Chris Moore.

Sue Butler voiced appreciation for the sense of community in Colchester: "Great local community and neighbours" she said, while Mike Smith commented on the accessibility of local amenities: "Very happy where I live - there's everything I want and more."

Phil Coleman offered a passion outlook, adding: "Too often the vociferous negative few that hate Colchester constantly run the place down."

He listed a range of aspects to be proud of, including: "An accessible Norman Castle, top performances from world renowned acts in Castle Park and Charter Hall, and £65million investment in a new leisure complex at Northern Gateway."

Mr Coleman concluded: "Yes it's got its problems and could be better but I've visited the vast majority of towns and cities in this country and after leaving South East London in 1981, I choose to live here for all that it provides."

Clearly the diversity of Colchester's offerings, from history to cuisine to community, leaves residents proud to call it home.
