GED Brannan admits Morecambe's first-half display was unacceptable after they lost 1-0 at home to Colchester United.

Arthur Read's excellent free-kick proved the difference between the two sides at the Mazuma Stadium, as the U's claimed victory in a hard-fought clash.

Brannan told the Morecambe FC website: "Very disappointed to be honest, especially with the first-half performance.

"I don't think we were at the races, in the first half.

"Obviously we've had injuries to a few major players and suspensions so when you've got a small squad and you miss players like that, it's hard to replace them.

"It's shown as we weren't up to scratch, in the first half.

"It was a worldy; the lad (Arthur Read) scored an absolutely great goal but we just weren't at it anywhere on the pitch.

"We had players jogging about which is just not acceptable - we'll have a chat about it on Monday and go through everything in the game.

Gazette:

"It just wasn't acceptable; the tempo wasn't there and the passing wasn't there but fair play to them, in the second half they came out and we had a right go at them."

Morecambe squandered a golden opportunity to equalise just after half-time when Colchester goalkeeper Owen Goodman denied Gerard Garner from the spot, after Jake Taylor had been brought down by Riley Harbottle in the area.

"We should have had a penalty in the first half - I've looked at it and it was a stonewall," added former Manchester City and Tranmere Rovers midfielder Brannan.

"How the referee hasn't given that in the first half, I don't know.

"He said there were two balls on the pitch but two or three weeks ago, they were two balls on the pitch and they gave a goal against us so there's no consistency about it, it's absolutely terrible.

Gazette:

"We got a penalty early in the second half and I thought we go on and win the game  - obviously Gerard missed it but it's one of those things.

"He didn't mean to miss it, he tried his best and obviously, the keeper went the right way.

"We should have won the game at the end of the day, with the second-half performance."
