THE charity working to save Colchester’s unique water tower has launched a logo and website for The Jumbo Project.

North Essex Heritage trustees gathered at the 140-year-old Victorian building to announce the website and unveil the logo which features the 40-metre tower.

Jumbo is the largest Victorian municipal water tower in the country and is a much-loved Colchester icon.

The charity has been given £250,000 in development funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to work on its plans to restore the Grade ll* listed building and transform it into a financially sustainable heritage and community space for Colchester.

The Jumbo Project is also supported by government funding, Historic England, and the Architectural Heritage Fund.

Simon Hal, chairman of North Essex Heritage, said: “I am sure our logo and the new website, jumbo.org.uk, will help raise the profile of The Jumbo Project as we continue to develop our plans for this much-loved building.”

North Essex Heritage has leased Jumbo, officially known as the Balkerne Water Tower, for 150 years.

It plans to restore and convert the building which is of national heritage importance with the aim of producing a commercially viable operation which pays for the building’s upkeep.
