Thousands of runners defy rain during this year’s Colchester half marathon.
More than 2,500 runners of all abilities took on the challenge to run 13.1 miles around the city for the annual sports event.
The race started at 9am at the Jobserve Community Stadium and the damp weather conditions could not keep the huge number of supportive spectators away to cheer the runners up.
Past many iconic and historic sights, the route also took the runners to the scenic country lanes and back to the stadium where the well-deserved medals awaited them.
Alex Gladley from the Windsor Slough Eaton and Hounslow Athletic Club finished the course in record time of one hour, seven minutes and 44 seconds, winning alongside Carolyn Hay from Mansfield Harriers with a time of one hour, 25 minutes and 59 seconds.
The annual event is organised by The Robin Cancer Trust and supported by the Running Colchester community, with all proceeds going towards the charity’s life-saving work against germ cell cancer.
Toby Freeman BCA, founder and CEO of The Robin Cancer Trust said: "We're delighted to have delivered another successful Colchester Half-Marathon for our incredible hometown.
“It's an honour and a privilege to see thousands of runners crossing the finish line after all their training - beating PB's, completing personal challenges, finishing the race in honour of loved ones, and in aid of a local charity.
“As always, a huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers and marshals for keeping our runners safe, the local companies who support this fantastic community event; the people of our hometown for lining the street and cheering everyone on, and most importantly - the thousands of runners who make all the hard work worth it.
“Thank you, Colchester, we can't wait to see you all at the start line again next year."
The charity expressed its deepest gratitude to its sponsors Ewals Cargo Care, Mersea Homes & Scutton Bland, Lifehouse Spa & Hotel, Runners World Colchester and 361 Europe.
Entries for next year’s event are already open and the event has been confirmed for March 16 2025.
