A MAN told magistrates “hopefully I’ll never see you again” after he had his driving licence revoked for clipping a wing mirror and driving off.
Liam Tillmanns appeared before magistrates on Tuesday where he admitted one charge of failing to stop after a road accident.
Colchester Magistrates’ Court heart how Tillmanns, 23, clipped the wing mirror of a parked Peugeot in Upper Holt Street, Earls Colne, last September.
When police officers arrived at Tillmanns’s address in Tey Road, Earls Colne, he is said to have told them “I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of gave up.”
Chair of the bench Andrew Campbell offered Tillmanns, who was unrepresented, “a chance to put some meat on the bone” by recounting to the court what happened.
Tillmans said: “I mean, at this point, I obviously regret it – I shouldn’t have done it."
When asked about his means of income, he said: “I’m currently in between jobs, so I’m unemployed – I just left my job on the fourth of this month.
“I’m going to Greece tomorrow to work in a hotel out there… hopefully.”
Chair of the bench Andrew Campbell replied: “Hopefully?”
Tillmanns said: “It depends on… well, this.”
Mr Campbell said: “Do you think we are going to lock you up? It’s quite serious, but it’s not that serious.”
But the magistrates’ legal advisor then told magistrates Tillmanns already had nine points on his licence owing to speeding offences he committed in a four-day period in 2020.
Mr Campbell then said: “You’ve got a lot of meat on the bone now, haven’t you?”
After the magistrates deliberated, Mr Campbell continued: “Here’s the bad news – because of this, you are going to get five penalty points.
“You already had nine points, so you are automatically disqualified for six months – you can’t drive any motor vehicle on a road or public place.”
Tillmanns replied: “In England? That’s fine.”
Mr Campbell said: “No, I don’t know the answer [of whether you can drive abroad] – you need to get advice from elsewhere.”
Before leaving the dock, Tillmanns said: “Lesson learnt – hopefully I’ll never see you again.”
Tillmanns must also pay £491 in costs.
