The Bishop of Colchester is backing Christian Aid Week.
This annual appeal, taking place from May 12–18, is an initiative of Christian Aid, a UK-based charity working to eradicate poverty worldwide.
The Rt Revd Roger Morris is encouraging people to support the cause, which this year concentrates on crisis-hit Burundi, one of the poorest countries in Africa.
Over 70 per cent of its population live in poverty with more than half of the children there chronically malnourished.
Christian Aid has been involved in Burundi since 1995, providing humanitarian aid during a civil conflict.
The charity's activities now focus on building self-sustaining communities through Village Savings and Loans Associations.
These associations, established in collaboration with partners, allow community members to save and borrow money, fuelling small businesses, and contributing to widespread socio-economic improvement.
Bishop Roger eagerly anticipates witnessing varied fundraising efforts.
He said: "Every year, during this appeal, people across Britain and Ireland get together to help create long-term change for people living in poverty.
"From hosting a Big Brekkie to engaging in all kinds of sponsored events, volunteers the length and breadth of the country have fun while raising funds and championing the fight against poverty."
He also expressed his continual pleasure in participating in Christian Aid Week, terming it an opportunity to work with an "amazing group of people."
