HOMES in villages around Colchester were left in the dark for hours after a power cut which initially affected “several thousand properties”.
While some homes regained power quickly after the power cut which was first reported at 9.48am on Tuesday, almost 1,600 homes were left without power throughout the day.
The outage affected homes in the CO2 0, CO2 7, CO2 9, CO3 0, CO3 3, CO3 4, CO3 5, CO3 8, CO3 9, and CO6 1 postcode areas – including Birch and Layer de la Haye.
The power cut was caused by a fault on an underground electricity cable which was investigated by engineers, UK Power Networks said.

The company said: “We believe the issue is an underground cable fault that initially interrupted power to several thousand properties.
“However, we have managed to divert power back to some properties, so 1,589 properties are still affected.
“Specialist engineers from our control room will continue to divert power remotely, so your power may come back on at any point.
“Sometimes we can't restore everyone this way, so we're also sending staff to check our equipment.”
Power was restored to all affected homes by 3pm, it added.
