BARROW have appointed Stephen Clemence as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

The former Gills boss has been appointed as the Bluebirds' successor to Pete Wild, who left Holker Street earlier this month.

Clemence had been in charge at fellow League Two side Gillingham this season, taking over last November.

The former Spurs and Birmingham City midfielder took over from Neil Harris, who went on to manage Cambridge United and then Millwall.

Clemence told the Barrow website: "I'm absolutely delighted to be here.

"It's obviously all happened very quickly.

"I was away on holiday last week and things progressed fast.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge and I've got to thank the owners for giving me the opportunity.

"I've had some good conversations with them and with Ian.

"I like the vision going forward and I'm delighted to be here and I can't wait to get started."

Clemence led Gillingham to a 12th-place finish in the League Two table and they ended their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Doncaster Rovers.

During his spell at the Kent club, performances drastically improved and he led the Gills to a top-half finish but was surprisingly dismissed at the end of the season.
