FORMER Colchester United midfielder Tom Lapslie has been released by Torquay United.

The 28-year-old will leave the National League South club after three seasons when his contract expires, next month.

Lapslie has made 72 league and cup appearances for Torquay since joining them in the summer of 2021, after being released by Colchester.

He was one of 11 senior players to be released by the U’s, ending his decade-long association with the club.

Lapslie joined Colchester’s academy at the age of 16 and progressed through the Florence Park youth ranks before making his senior debut, in January 2015.

The combative midfielder went on to make 170 league and cup senior appearances for the U’s.

 

Lapslie became a prominent performer for Colchester’s under-18s, helping them to a Youth Alliance Cup double in 2014.

He made his first league start for the U’s at the start of the following year and went on to become a regular in midfield, under several different managers.

Lapslie enjoyed a particular career highlight in the 2019-20 season when he scored Colchester’s winning spot-kick in their memorable Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out triumph over Premier League giants Spurs.

He is one of 14 players to be released by Torquay at the end of their contracts, this summer.
