AN attacker who tried to stab his victim to death jumped out of a window in a desperate attempt to escape from the police, a court has heard.

Police had been pursuing Kaya Adu after he stabbed a 16-year-old inside Pepe’s Piri Piri, in St Botolph’s Street, Colchester, on Tuesday, January 9.

The victim sustained five stab wounds and two punctures which caused the partial collapse of both lungs, and he later received lifesaving surgery at Colchester Hospital.

On Thursday, January 11, police entered an address in Colchester to arrest Adu and Rushi Jadeja.

The two had attempted to conceal bags of cannabis and a collection of knives before Adu leapt out of a window and landed on a side gate before trying to flee police.

An officer tasered Adu whilst another arrested Jadeja inside the property.

Police later searched The Dell, near Priory Street, and found two knives which Adu and Jadeja had hidden inside a garden compost bin.

The blood on the knife matched the DNA of the victim, and Adu’s fingerprints were found on the knife.

The second knife was found to have Jadeja’s fingerprints on it, Chelmsford Crown Court heard on Tuesday.

Sentencing Adu and Jadeja, Her Honour Judge Caroline Loram said: “The victim was put into an induced coma – these were life-threatening injuries.

“It is accepted by both that this is a joint enterprise attack – in particular, it is accepted by Jadeja that he knew Adu was armed with a knife.

“Jadeja accepts his intention was that really serious harm would be caused by Adu.

“In the taxi, there was a conversation with Adu where Jadeja was asking for a reward for his actions.

“Adu’s role speaks for itself – his knife was produced readily and quickly, and he used it not once but repeatedly.

“Again and again, he put that knife into the body of his victim.”

She continued: “This was a vicious knife attack on a teenage boy – it was premeditated and carried out in public.

“This is the sort of offence that quite rightly fills the public with horror, and the perception is that these offences have come more prevalent.”

Both Adu and Jadeja were both jailed for six years and nine months, with Adu to serve a further three years on licence.
