Colchester United has clarified its position after club supporters were upset over its new parking system.

With the expansion of the Northern Gateway development and more retailers arriving, Colchester United has introduced a new automatic number plate recognition system for vehicles on site.

The new rules left some fans upset, expressing concerns over potential parking fines and having to pay for parking when travelling on coaches to away games.

The club has now issued a clarification on the new rules.

In a statement, the club said: “Some initial information given out by us was unfortunately incorrect and caused some confusion for our loyal supporters leaving their cars whilst following Danny Cowley and the squad across the country at our away games.

“As things stand, for the vast majority of away matches, when the stadium is manned, supporters will be able to register their vehicle number plate in reception to exempt themselves from any charges.

“For the minimal other away matches, we are in discussions with the CUSA, (Colchester United Supporters Association), about solutions.”

Colchester United said the new system is to "enhance experience" and ensure parking spaces are reserved for its customers.

It also said the decision was made "given the increasing variety of businesses in the area".

Concerns have been raised if there will be enough parking at the nearby Northern Gateway site.

The development will have two car parks, one with 300 spaces near the sports park and a second at the development.

A spokesman for Colchester Council said: "The 750-space multi-storey car park at the Northern Gateway Leisure Park is nearing completion and we have a car park operator lined up to manage this.

"There will be enough space for all cars and customers will not need to park at the nearby Sports Park or anywhere else."

For fans who are visiting the club shop, ticket office, meeting club staff, or attending on-site events and meetings, parking at the stadium remains complementary following the correct registration at reception.

Those who wish to park without attending an on-site event can pay using the RingGo app or call 0203 046 0010 to make a payment.

For first-team matchdays, parking procedures remain unchanged, and fans need to purchase parking through the official ticket sale website.
