A COMMEMORATIVE plaque has been put up in memory of an adored Colchester Zoo animal after its death.

Back in March, the venue announced the sad death of male white rhino, Otto.

Born in 1997, Otto arrived at Colchester Zoo in 2009 from Knuthenborg Safari Park in Bandholm, Denmark

He was under veterinary observation which ultimately led the zoo's team to have to further investigate via general anaesthesia.

Unfortunately, Otto, passed away while under anaesthesia despite all the best efforts to help him.

His legacy lives on not only with his six calves, but now a memorial at the zoo site.

White Rhinos are listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species therefore Otto played a vital role in the conservation of his species.

In celebration of this, a memorial sign has been put in place at his home, Kingdom of the Wild.

A spokesman for the zoo said: “Otto was such a soft and caring boy who would love tickles from his keepers.

"He is greatly missed by everyone who ever had the pleasure of working with him but has left us all with cherished memories.”
