A RUNNER has tragically died while competing in the Southend Half Marathon.

Emergency services were called to the scene of Mess Road in Shoebury on Sunday morning to reports of a medical emergency.

Essex Police and multiple ambulance attended the scene half a mile away from the race finish line alongside two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.

The East of England Ambulance Service have now confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics.

It comes 10 years since Nick Palmer died at the finish line doing the Southend Half Marathon.

The Finish Line Fund was set up in his memory and has handed out over £70,000 in charity grants

In an official statement released on Sunday afternoon, a spokesman said: “We were called just before 11am with reports of a medical emergency on Mess Road in Shoeburyness.

“Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical crews, an adult man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A Havens Hospices spokesman said: “It is with immense sadness that we can confirm a runner who took part in the Southend Half Marathon has died.

"The male runner collapsed on the route and treatment was given immediately.

"Paramedics, ambulances and an air ambulance attended shortly afterwards to give further medical treatment. His next of kin have been informed.

"Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

"We know this is very upsetting news for the whole running community and our thoughts are with all those affected by this.”
