FED-UP residents are being forced to wait a fortnight to use Colchester Recycling Centre after experiencing problems booking time slots.

There are concerns some people are block-booking slots and then not turning up.

The issues have been going on for about a month.

County councillor Lee Scordis said: “For almost a month I have been representing residents on the extraordinary waits to book slots at the recycling centre.

“I have now escalated it to the cabinet member as circumstances have not improved. There is a fear some people are block-booking slots, while not turning up.

"The system was working well but sadly some people seem to be ruining it for others.

"I hope the council can look at a system that reprimands those who are clearly trying to manipulate the system to the detriment of others."

Back in November, Essex County Council carried out a survey for people to have their say on whether they wanted to continue having to book slots for recycling centres.

About 18,000 people took part in the consultation to provide feedback and suggestions.

The transition stage took place in February but is still a problem for some residents.

It is currently reported to be taking about two weeks for people who want to use the recycling centre in Colchester to get a slot.

The county council says the latest problems are due to a rise in demand.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “We appreciate residents’ patience as we experience an increase in demand to use Colchester Recycling Centre.

“We are continually improving and refining the booking process, as set out when it transitioned from a trial to a county-wide service in February.

“In the short term, we will be increasing available capacity in the area to ensure residents can dispose of their recycling and waste as quickly as possible.”
