NUMEROUS homes across a certain Colchester postcode will have their power switched off for over five hours today.

UK Power Networks says it will be carrying out planned work in Horkesley Road in the CO4 5 postcode area today to upgrade its transformer.

From 9am up to potentially 3.30pm this afternoon, houses in the area will not have access to power.

UK Power Networks has confirmed seven properties will be affected in Horkesley Road, Boxted, and those affected would have received a letter in advance of the power outing.

The transformer is being upgraded as a customer requested for a larger electricity supply.

A statement on the UK Power Networks website said: “Once complete this work will strengthen the electricity network in the area and it will reduce the risk of having an unplanned power cut in the future.

“This will also give the third party their desired outcome as we have a duty to provide electricity when requested.

“To complete the work safely, we need to turn your power off and upgrade the transformer.”

UK Power Networks has also offered guidance on how to prepare for a planned power cut.

It recommends keeping a torch in place where you can reach it easily, switch off appliances and lights but leave one light so you know when power has been restored.

If you have a mobile phone, make sure to use a phone power bank to charge it if you have low battery.

The power for the area should be back on at 14.30pm at the earliest.
