THIS year's Colchester Carnival will see part of the parade pass the iconic Jumbo water tower for the first time.

The carnival will take to Colchester’s streets on July 13, with 45 communities representing 25 nationalities.

Built in 1883, Jumbo is the largest surviving Victorian municipal water tower in Britain.

Udaibahadur Gurung, director of Colchester City Carnival and chairman of the Colchester Diverse Communities Network, said: “The carnival’s theme this year is Together We Shine.

"We are looking forward to a colourful procession showcasing the unique cultures and talents within our community.

“We wanted to include Jumbo in the route to highlight the Jumbo Project to save the water tower and bring it back into sustainable use.

“This is an exciting first for the carnival and we hope people will be outside the Mercury Theatre to support us and show their love for Jumbo, which means so much to everyone.

“The procession will start from Circular Road North and the first five communities will march along Head Street before turning on to Church Street and passing Jumbo, our Colchester city icon.

“The procession will then re-join the rest of the participants and floats for the parade along High Street to Firstsite and the Minories.”
