COLCHESTER residents have been voting to name the newest addition to Colchester Zoo's dik-dik family.
The zoo called for the public to help the animal care team name the Kirk's dik-dik calf, who turned four weeks old today.
Due to the mother's name being Pumpkin, and previous calves of hers being named Pie, Spice and Munchkin, all the potential names were related.
The names up for grabs were Katsu, a traditional Japanese dish, Jack, short for Jack-o-lantern, Squash - pumpkins are part of the squash family - and Pepo, after pumpkins' scientific name of Cucurbita pepo.
A zoo spokesman said: "Thank you to everyone who cast their vote to help us name our Kirk’s dik-dik calf.
"We are delighted to announce our new arrival, who turns four weeks old today, has been named Squash!"
Pumpkin and baby Squash will stay indoors for a lot of the time until the new calf has grown stronger.
They will then join the rest of their family and dad Demetri in their main habitat at the Edge of Africa.
The Kirk’s dik-dik is one of the smallest members of the antelope family, usually only weighing up to 7kg.
