A BLUE plaque is set to be placed on a iconic Dedham building in memory of a mathematician.

Permission has been granted for The Essex Rose Tearoom in Dedham to place a blue plaque on the building.

It will be for mathematician Alice Lee who lived from 1858 to 1939 and was born in the village.

The plaque's words will say: "Demonstrating that intelligence is not limited by skull capacity, she debunked myths about the intellect of women.

"One of the earliest female graduates in Britain."

Lee was awarded a PhD in 1901 and undertook statistical work for the government during the First World War.

The plaque also includes a line saying it is sponsored by Dedham Parish Council.

A blue plaque commemorates the history of a building.

The plaque, which is 17 inches in size, will be located on the east side wall of the tearoom.

The application which is dated April 16, 2024, gives the works three years to be completed.

National Landscapes, a charity which looks after Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, raised no objection to the plans.
