A real estate company is looking to revive a former supermarket in Colchester’s High Street.

The closure of the former Marks and Spencer in September 2022 had left many residents and campaigners upset after attempts to get bosses to reconsider failed.

After trading for 91 years, the branch was shut down and a new store opened at Stane Retail Park.

Now, it has been confirmed the property has been bought by a property agency, which is looking for new commercial tenants.

Simon Marner, City and Country’s land and property director, said: “Following the exchange of contracts for the purchase of the former M&S department store, we are currently considering options for a commercial-led scheme for this significant and prominent building within the city centre.

“The site occupies a prime trading position with frontages on to both the High Street and Culver Walk, being part of the popular Lion Shopping Centre.

“At City and Country, we are committed to delivering forward-thinking schemes with a focus on high-quality design and we are looking forward to being able to put our stamp on this building.

“This acquisition on one of the oldest high streets in the UK represents a unique opportunity for us to create a vibrant commercial offering in a well-established area, tying in with the exciting city centre improvements proposed by Colchester City Council as set out in their Colchester City Masterplan.”

The Gazette understands that £1million could be needed for building works and an additional £1.5million to fund the removal of asbestos reportedly inside the site.

Castle ward councillor Mark Goacher was delighted to hear the news that a revival of the premises could be around the corner.

He said: “It would be fantastic if things are moving and work can start. It would be great to have another key store or a retailer back in there. I’m awaiting to see how things will come together.

“It is great to see this space used again.”
