A TEMPEREMENTAL security system at Colchester United's stadium which is “constantly waking up residents” has left people at the end of their tether.

Residents in Mile End say they have been left unable to get a good night’s sleep because of a deafening alarm system which gets set off randomly – and often in the early hours of the morning – at the JobServe Community Stadium.

After the most recent spate of incidents this weekend, a councillor has now called on the U’s to invest in new alarms to give residents some peace.

Residents were woken up at 12.53am on Saturday morning when the alarms were set off, and were disturbed a second time only hours later when the same system sprung into action.

Colchester United confirmed both occasions were a false alarm.

Colchester councillor Martin Goss has now called for the U’s to look into replacements for the alarm system which he says has been a long-term problem for residents.

He said: “This has been going on for years – it is constantly waking up residents because it is quite an audible alarm.

“They just haven’t got to grips with sorting it out.

“There are successive periods it will go off every night and it’s obviously very annoying when people are trying to sleep, particularly in the summer when they’ve got windows open.

“If the system is end of life, then a new system is required and that will need investment from the club – and it clearly is getting towards end of life.”

Mr Goss added much of the frustration stems from the fact the repeated problems are showing no sign of abating.

He continued: “Residents say they are fed up with their sleep being disturbed – it keeps happening.Frustrated - councillor Martin Goss said residents are growing frustrated with the perceived lack of action from the football clubFrustrated - councillor Martin Goss said residents are growing frustrated with the perceived lack of action from the football club (Image: Steve Brading)

“I realise there are a lot of sensors but the stadium is a key part of the community and things like this need to be sorted out.”

Colchester United was contacted for comment.
