CAMERON McGeehan has played his last game for Colchester United.

U's boss Danny Cowley has confirmed that the midfielder, who finished as the club's second-highest scorer last season with ten goals, will not be returning to the club for the 2024-25 campaign.

McGeehan was offered a new contract by Colchester, at the end of last season.

However, the former Luton Town and Barnsley player has decided to pursue other options, with League One and League Two clubs interested in his services.

Cowley said: "Cam McGeehan won't be coming back.

"We've had really open conversations with Cam.

"He did really well for the club, last year even in the difficult position it found itself in.

"He scored double figures from midfield in a team that struggled which I think is to be commended.

"He's a good kid and he works incredibly hard against the ball.

"We have a lot of respect for Cam but I think he sees his future elsewhere.

"We didn't anticipate having the opportunity to sign Jack Payne, if I'm honest.

"But that opportunity became available and as soon as it did, Nicky and I have worked with Jack before."

McGeehan made 39 league and cup appearances for Colchester after joining them on a free transfer last September.

At the end of last season, he wrote on his Instagram page: ‘Another season playing the beautiful game. I found myself back in England after 3 years in Belgium keen to remind everyone that I’m back and found myself starting again in League 2.

‘It was challenge coming back trying to weigh whether to stay in Europe or come home, but after missing pre season and the first 6 games it was time.

‘You can’t beat 3pm on a Saturday and the English banter, and I was very grateful to everyone at @colu_official for a great year playing with some top young players + a group of great people

‘Getting in the box and scoring double figures is something I’m proud of.

‘I’m not sure what is next for me yet but time for a holiday with my baby boy and amazing wife who inspire and support me always'.
