Car thieves have been sent back to prison after hitting speeds of 90mph before smashing into another car and hitting railings as he fled police.

Both the driver and the 27-year-old passenger, from Colchester, have been transferred to prison after the dramatic police chase.

The pursuit ensued after the stolen Citroen, which was reportedly being driven in the Benfleet area, failed to stop for police on Canvey. This was brought to a halt after the driver crashed into another car and metal railing on Canvey Road. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

The Citroen driver and passenger tried to run off but were detained by police, with the help members of the public who directed officers to find the pair.

Essex Police’s head of roads policing, Adam Pipe, said: “My road crime team are officers dedicated to keeping the roads safe and who identify anyone who makes criminal use of our roads, putting other drivers and their passengers at risk of harm.

“Failing to stop for officers is illegal, but driving at speeds of 90mph is dangerous to other road users and is completely unacceptable.

“We will continue to use all our available resources where they are needed. Crime has no border and neither do we.”

The car had been reported stolen in Kent less than 12 hours earlier.

Enquiries at the scene discovered the driver and 27-year-old passenger were both wanted on recall to prison for breaching conditions imposed.

The 24-year-old driver from Kent was arrested on suspicion of theft of vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop and drug driving. He was further arrested for no insurance and no driving licence.
