A STRIKING new mural depicting Celtic warrior queen Boudica has been unveiled at a retirement flats complex.
Colchester Borough Homes commissioned the mural at Grymes Dyke Court.
The artwork, designed to brighten the communal entrance space, shows famous the Iceni queen set against Grymes Dyke, the area's Iron Age landmark.
Colchester Borough Homes (CBH) employee Sarah Jones created the mural in her spare time, dedicating four months to its completion.
She said: "I’m so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the residents of Grymes Dyke Court on this piece.
"We worked together to develop a design that would reflect the local area’s rich history and incorporate their powerful choice of Boudica as the central figure.
“It’s been great to be able to bring together my work at CBH with my passion for art and creativity.
"I hope the mural serves as a source of pride and enjoyment for everyone for many years to come."
The original inspiration for the mural came from CBH assistant housing officer Will Briggs.
Following three design consultations, residents selected the image of Boudica, with the mural also incorporating the historic Grymes Dyke, highlighting the area's rich history and heritage.
Resident Margaret Harkin said: "I’m delighted that Grymes Dyke Court now displays a beautiful mural of Queen Boudica.
"The mural highlights the historical importance of the area and will stand for years for all to see and admire."
Colchester mayor Lesley Scott-Boutell officially unveiled the mural.
CBH chief exec Philip Sullivan said: "We are thrilled to see Sarah’s beautiful artwork on display at Grymes Dyke Court.
"This project is a fantastic example of CBH's commitment to engage with its local communities."
He praised Ms Jones' “talent and dedication”, and described the mural as a positive example of how art can create positive change.
Mr Sullivan added: "The Grymes Dyke Court mural is part of a programme of art installations and exhibitions we are planning for the scheme, fostering a vibrant and welcoming environment for residents."
