A POPULAR American fast-food chain which is moving into an empty building in Colchester’s High Street has applied to make changes to the roof.
It was confirmed in April that burger chain Wendy’s was taking over the former Next store, and now its bosses plan to add to the unit’s roof.
A planning application has been submitted on behalf of Wendy’s franchisee NFH Restaurants to Colchester Council and if it is approved, the business will be able to install mechanical equipment.
Wendy’s wants to add supply and extraction ducts and four condenser units to the roof’s flat surface.
They will provide cooling for the building, which is a requirement if the premises is going to be used for food.
This new Wendy’s branch follows on from the success of the Wendy’s drive-thru at the Northern Gateway Leisure Park in north Colchester, which opened in July last year.
An opening date for the High Street branch is yet to be revealed.
In May, Colchester Council turned down an application for new signage there.
Colchester Civic Society objected to the application to install numerous Wendy’s signs, saying they would be “inappropriate" for the city centre.
A decision is yet to be made for the latest planning application.
