COLCHESTER’S School Garden Competition is back for its third year and it's taking place in Culver Square.
Ten primary schools have created gardens that are focused on two themes – water conservation and mental wellbeing.
The displays started on July 17 and people are encouraged to explore the gardens, vote for their favourite and help their chosen school win a School Gardening Success Plan.
Voting opened on July 17 and finishes on September 10.
On August 21, CBBC Blue Peter gardener, Lee Connelly – also known as the Skinny Jean Gardener, will be guiding a mini-festival celebration at Culver Square from 10am until 3pm.
Gardening for children is important according to the project which states.
A spokesman for the project said: “Teaching children about water conservation in the garden instils a sense of responsibility for the planet and encourages eco-friendly habits from a young age.
“Gardening itself offers numerous mental well-being benefits for children.
"Spending time outdoors, digging in the soil, and caring for plants can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase feelings of happiness and fulfilment.
“Gardening provides a sensory-rich experience that stimulates the senses and promotes mindfulness, allowing children to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the natural world."
