COLCHESTER United striker Bradley Ihionvien is eager to push on to another level this season - on both a team and individual basis.

The talented 20-year-old is preparing for his second full season with the U’s first team, having burst onto the EFL scene last summer.

Ihionvien made 34 league and cup appearances for Colchester in the 2023-24 campaign under three different permanent managers, scoring five times including crucial equalisers at Salford City and Swindon Town.

The U’s academy product is now aiming to have an even greater impact for the U’s in the forthcoming season, as they bid to challenge at the top end of the League Two table.

Ihionvien said: “Last season was just about trying to get in and around it and get a few games in, which was good.

“I’m grateful to everyone here for that and this season is about pushing on, hopefully claiming a shirt for my own and pushing the club on further than they’ve been, in the last few years.”

Ihionvien has looked sharp for Colchester so far in pre-season and has netted in each of their opening two friendlies, against Wycombe Wanderers and Maldon and Tiptree.

“Two goals in two games, you can’t really ask for any more so it’s been going well,” said Ihionvien.

“I just want to keep winning, keep scoring and stay fit.

“The fitness side of it has been going well too and I’m feeling very sharp and ready to start the season.

“We’re gelling well together and we’re ready for the new campaign.

“We’re all getting to know each other very well and building our relationships.

“That’s what we’re doing and it’s going very well in training and in games.”

Meanwhile, Ihionvien says new signing Lyle Taylor has already been helping him since his arrival at the club.

The experienced 34-year-old joined the U’s on a one-year deal earlier this month, with a view to him not only playing for the team but also helping their talented young strikers like Ihionvien and Samson Tovide.

Ihionvien added: “Lyle has been helping us already since he’s come in.

“It’s good to have a role model and someone as experienced as that, in and around the training ground.

“Last year was John (Akinde) and this year it’s Lyle, so it’s good to have him around.”
