It's by no means recent, but Colchester's impressive scene for music, arts, and culture continues to grow.
I've showcased thousands of events through the Keep Colchester Cool project I launched in 2009.
Now, I'll bring the best events to you each week which I recommend checking out.
Here are my five recommendations for music, arts, and culture in Colchester in the week ahead.
This Saturday, St Leonard-at-the-Hythe church will host its first ‘Beer & Hymns’ evening in 700 years! Attendees can enjoy a BBQ and beers from local breweries while belting out some classic hymns, accompanied by the church organ at full throttle.
Think Songs Of Praise without the religious aspect, accompanied by a few ales.
This unique event offers a fun chance to revisit some old hymns, just like you did in school assembly!
Doors open at 6pm. Free entry.
“Beryl & Clive (Their Musical)” is a wildly funny comedy playing at the Headgate on Saturday.
Follow Beryl and Clive as they break all the rules to fulfil their creative dreams. Amy Gibbons’ writing takes you on a joyful journey into the absurd, celebrating relationships and self-expression. Expect clowning, song, and dance.
Doors open at 7.45pm. Tickets are £15.
Since her solo debut in 2018, Alison Cotton has become one of the UK’s most evocative musicians.
With her viola, vocals, and harmonium, she creates eerie, beautiful music. She plays at Colchester Arts Centre on Monday, supported by Lee Ashcroft.
Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.
Holiday Fun: Make takes place at Firstsite this summer with free creative activities for ages 4-11, but all are welcome.
These activities support families facing economic challenges or needing extra assistance during the school holidays, including those qualifying for benefits-based free school meals.
You can drop in anytime between 10am and 2.30pm, Tuesday through Saturday. No booking is required, but adults must stay with their children.
Bassline and UK Garage take over Babas Bar this Friday night with Garage Mayhem, presented by Lemz Productions and Soul Tribe Music.
Headlined by The Pharmacist and featuring a stellar lineup of garage DJs and MCs, it should be a good one.
Starts at 9pm. Tickets are £3.
