A RECORD enthusiast has opened his own shop fewer than 12 months after he started selling his wares at pop-up events.
Stone Rock Records was started in late 2023 by Jonathan Stoneman, 22, who began opening pop-up shops after beginning his record collection.
This week, Jonathan is officially opening Stone Rock Records’ permanent residence in Earls Colne Recreation Club.
He said: “The very first pop-up was in December 2023 at Two Brews in Colchester.
“It was very positive. That was the start of it being something that needed to be done every week."
“I had to keep the fire stoked after that,” he added.
Since then, Stone Rock Records has regularly appeared across Essex in Braintree, Southend, and Chelmsford, building a community of music enthusiasts with each appearance.
Jonathan continued: “I’ve been building it up slowly, and it’s very fun.
“I can’t do it on my own because it’s so logistically difficult, so I’ve had lots of support, especially from my dad.”
Jonathan said he was thrilled to finally be opening his shop.
He said: “It’s a very nice step up having a permanent residence.
“It feels so gratifying and very validating.
“All the effort I put in has grown to this level, where I’m now able to make that next step to something permanent.”
Jonathan still has pop-up shops booked for the rest of the year, with a market stall in South Woodham Ferrers and a monthly appearance at a Southend record fair.
He added: “We will still be Two Brews for the first Saturday of every month.”
The business has steadily grown a community of record lovers, and it boasts an ever-growing collection of vinyl records where there’s “something for everyone.”
Stone Rock Records’ mission is to offer the best vinyl at affordable prices, so everyone can have access to physical copies of their favourite music.
Among the collection are classic rock, jazz, and synth-pop records.
Jonathan said: “We’ve got the shop pretty close to being there.
“I’ve got some stock I’ve had for a month and some stock I bought days ago.
“Every pop-up shop has been very positive, so I’m very excited to have a permanent residence.”
Stone Rock Records can be found at Green Farm Meadow, Halstead Road, in Earls Colne, and on Facebook and Instagram.
It’ll be open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
