A FIRE broke out after a candle in a wax-burner set a bedside table alight and left the property heavily smoke-logged.

Firefighters from Colchester and Leigh stations were called to a blaze in Hargood Close, in Colchester, at 4.30am today (August 1).

Crews reported the flat was heavily smoke-logged, after a fire in a bedroom.

Firefighters are urging residents to take care with candles.

Watch manager Ian Ryder, of Colchester Fire Station, said: “Please keep an eye on candles at all times.

"If you need to leave the room, please blow the candle out.”
