PLANS for a Colchester 'glamping' experience have been turned down after it was ruled "inappropriate" and amid fears it would have an “adverse effect” on wildlife habitats.

Stour Valley Design submitted a planning application on behalf of Kevin Pugh, of Straight Road, Boxted, for holiday lodges and an up-market camping site.

The site would have been at the back of Mr Pugh’s property in Straight Road.

The application was for two detached holiday lodges with two bedrooms and a glamping paddock with nine glamping pods.

Access to the proposed site would be from Straight Road, and the lodges would have been used for holiday and weekend accommodation during the spring and summer months.

The plans said the site would “boost the local rural economy as well as provide breaks and holidays for tourists and visitors who can take advantage of the existing quiet country lanes”.

It is the third application for glamping which has been rejected at the site.

In 2021, an application for holiday lodges to the rear of the property was rejected and a second application was rejected in September 2022 for four holiday lodges.

In the latest ruling, Colchester Council said proposed site is not “an appropriate location for tourism due to the limited walking and cycling access to facilities and services”.

It was also rejected on the grounds that parts of the site could be a habitat for wildlife and there was a chance of protected animals such as bats and reptiles being affected by the development.
