A LANDFILL site in Ardleigh could become a source for renewable energy if plans are given the green light.

UG World has applied to Essex County Council to build a landfill gas recovery site at Martells Quarry Landfill, on Slough Lane.

The site was used for sand and gravel extraction in the late 1990s and then  as a landfill site until December 2023.

Essex County Council granted permission in October 2022 for landfill gas-fuelled electricity generation station, with operations limited to the end of 2023.

The permission was never implemented, but the scheme could now be revived.

In a statement, the developer stated: “The proposed development would capture landfill gas generated within Ardleigh landfill, and instead put it into beneficial use.

“This would involve capturing 100p per cent of the landfill gas currently sent through the flare stack and processing this gas into a biomethane, for use as a road transport fuel, and solid carbon capture product used as an additive to fertiliser or feedstock to other industrial processes.”

Representations regarding the plans can be made until August 9 on Essex County Council’s planning portal.
