COLCHESTER Council has warned drivers it may have to implement double red lines at a notorious parking spot outside a new venue as motorists continue to flout the rules.

The city’s new Hollywood Bowl has been open for more than a month, with visitors enjoying games and fun.

But the parking rules outside the venue continue to be ignored.

The road outside the complex, United Way, is a clearway, marked through signs on lamp posts prohibiting parking and loading at any time.

In the first week of the site being open, the North Essex Parking Partnership (NEPP) dished out 31 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) to drivers and warned them to avoid parking there.

New signage has also been added, advertising parking at the nearby and newly constructed multi-storey car park.

Despite this, fines continue to be issued, with NEPP issuing 40 last week.

A spokesman said: “Drivers are reminded of the clearway restrictions on United Way. Last week, 40 PCNs were issued to vehicles parked along the road.

“A clearway prohibits stopping at any time, which has been the case for several years on United Way.

“Clearway signage is prominent throughout the road, with additional repeater signs for emphasis.

“For convenient parking options, drivers are encouraged to use the new multi-storey car park located behind the Hollywood Bowl.

“The car park entrance is accessed from the Wendy’s/Greggs exit on the roundabout at Exit 28 on the A12. Please note that the car park is not accessible from United Way.”

With the issue continuing, the parking partnership has warned it may implement double red lines.

On double red lines, you cannot stop at all unless you are a licensed taxi or a blue badge holder, then you can drop off.

The spokesman continued: “NEPP is committed to ensuring the safety and smooth flow of traffic on our roads.

“We encourage all drivers to familiarise themselves with parking regulations in the area to avoid receiving a PCN.

“We are working closely with Essex Highways to explore additional measures to improve awareness of the parking restrictions at this location.

“This includes the potential for upgrading the current restrictions to double red lines, subject to securing necessary funding.”
