The third annual Colchester School Garden competition is currently underway in Culver Square.

It started on July 17 and will finish on September 10.

Ten schools have created gardens which are focused on two themes - water conservation and mental wellbeing.

North Primary School and Nursery, St James’ Primary, Queen Boudica Primary, Langenhoe Community Primary, Millfields Primary, Gosbecks Primary, and Prettygate Junior School have entered the competition.

Friar’s Grove Primary, Hazelmere Junior School, and St Lawrence Primary are also competing.

People are encouraged to explore the gardens, vote for their favourite and help their chosen school win a School Gardening Success Plan.

On Wednesday, CBBC Blue Peter gardener Lee Connelly – also known as the Skinny Jean Gardener - will be guiding a mini-festival celebration at Culver Square from 10am to 3pm.

A spokesman for the project said: “Teaching children about water conservation in the garden instils a sense of responsibility for the planet and encourages eco-friendly habits from a young age.

“Gardening itself offers numerous mental well-being benefits for children.

"Spending time outdoors, digging in the soil and caring for plants can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase feelings of happiness and fulfilment.”
