If there were such a thing as a Gilberd equivalent of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Fin Godwin and Sara Nave are pretty much as close as you can get.

The two haven’t developed stage names just yet, but they have started early in their music careers and when they opened their exam results on Thursday, there was only going to be one subject they had their eyes on.

Fin received a grade 8 and Sara a grade 7 for music, which is not particularly surprising given they have already started performing at open mic nights in Colchester and Chelmsford.

Fin and Sara have a versatility to their talents, with Fin playing the drums and guitar whilst Sara takes the role of lead singer.

The piano playing talents are shared, and both will head to Colchester Institute later this year to study music.

Being boyfriend and girlfriend whilst performing as a musical duo has its challenges though, as Sara admits.

“We have had arguments from time to time – it’s not like we do it perfectly well”, she said.

The key, Fin says, is to ensure they both feel confident about the songs they are going to perform.

“We only decide songs we do if we are both comfortable with it – we always make sure we both agree," he said.

“It’s always fun – there are definitely nervous beforehand.

“Once we get going with the first song we feel comfortable again.”

Head girl's acting ambitions

Head girl Carys Palmer will also be pursuing creative endeavours later this year when she enrols at Suffolk One to complete an acting diploma.

Grade 9s in history, drama, and English literature have helped her cause, but so too has her role as the lead in the school’s production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which she played Baroness Bomburst.

“It was my first proper time speaking and singing in front of people – once I got over that, it was something I could take into my public speaking skills.

“I am excited to be surrounded by people passionate about the subject like I am – it is a whole new thing for me to learn and take part in.

“It will be good to open some opportunities for the future.

“It is really exciting for me because it has been something I have been wanting to do for a long time.”
