Reporter George Pizani visited Adventure Island to try out the park’s newest ride, Vertigo.
The name ‘Vertigo’ definitely feels accurate when you’re stood at the base of this massive 38-metre-high ride. It’s the park’s biggest drop tower and adds a distinctive new element to Adventure Island’s seafront silhouette.
After opening in April, Vertigo has quickly become one of the park’s most popular attractions due to its combination of stomach-turning drops and unbeatable views across the seaside city.
It’s first summer has been a resounding success, and despite some expected apprehension, I was eager to experience its unique thrill.
Any lingering fears I may have had at the thought of being dropped from a height of 38 metres were quickly eased when I spoke to ride host, Queensley Ahwireng.
After some short safety checks, Vertigo began to rise. As we reached the top of this towering attraction, the views across Southend became increasingly impressive. I took in the landscape, completely forgetting about what was about to happen.
And then we dropped…
Over the course of a few minutes, vertigo rose and fell multiple times, each drop unleashing an adrenaline rush that lasted well after the ride finished. All around me, riders screamed with a mix of excitement and fear.
When Vertigo returned to the ground, our safety bars lifted, and in a state of slight disorientation, we waddled off the ride’s platform.
If you’re seeking a thrill, or unrivalled views, Vertigo is an experience you will not forget.
