A DARTS legend is set to make an appearance at a charity event in Colchester this weekend.

Paul Messer has organised a charity darts tournament at the Rovers Tye pub in Ipswich Road on Saturday from 4pm.

Paul, who is the Colchester regional manager for Aaron Services, said the event will raise funds for the Cancer Wellbeing Centre at Colchester Hospital in Turner Road.

Paul said: “We’re doing something for the community.

"I chose Colchester Hospital as they looked after my son who was born three months premature, 16 years ago, I lived in Clacton at the time.

"My mum has had breast cancer, she is in remission, but I’ve seen the impact it has emotionally.

“The support they get is unbelievable, they speak to people who understand what they have been going through.

“Cancer touches everyone, everyone knows someone who has had it, it is an awful thing."

Paul is a fan of darts and used to play in a few leagues around 20 years ago in London.

For the event, he decided to pick darts because it is a sport most people can do.

On the day, 16 employees from Aaron Services and its associates will battle it out in a tournament.

Businesses have donated prizes for a raffle and there will be collection buckets and a speech from a spokesman at Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity.

Mr George, who is also known as a television personality, is hoping to make an appearance later in the evening.

The darts player has gotten involved as Bobby’s son Richie used to work at Aaron Services and knows one of the company’s regional managers.

Paul, who is from Canvey Island, is thrilled that he is willing to be so generous with his time.

He said: “I’m absolutely amazed, I was trying to think of a darts player who could attend and I knew Bobby George was local.

“He is an absolute legend, I mentioned it to another regional manager who knew him as Bobby’s son Richie used to work for the company.

“He is going to try and make it, as long as he is ok, he will make an appearance.

“He’s going to bring some bits to sign.”

Everyone at Aaron Services is “excited” and has been “supportive” of Paul’s event.

Paul said: “The more we raise the better, but whatever we will raise will be enough.

“As long as people have fun and raise money then it will be great.”
