LYLE Taylor is pushing for his first Colchester United home appearance this weekend after making his long-awaited first appearance for the club.

The 34-year-old made his debut for the U’s after coming off the bench at half-time in their 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley, last Saturday.

Taylor came on as a substitute for Tom Hopper and played his part in Ben Goodliffe’s late equaliser at the Wham Stadium, on his Colchester bow.

U’s fans have had to wait to see the experienced striker in action for the club following his summer move from Cambridge United, on a one-year deal.

The former Nottingham Forest and Charlton Athletic forward picked up a calf injury in pre-season which left him sidelined but the Montserrat international is now raring to go and is set for his first action at the JobServe Community Stadium when Colchester host Bromley, on Saturday.

Colchester boss Danny Cowley said: “It was really good to get Lyle back and we’ll now try and sharpen his tools, ahead of the weekend.

“Hops came off at half-time and it was simply because he’d run himself into the ground on Wednesday and it was always my pre-determined plan.”

Meanwhile Cowley has high hopes for another of his summer signings, John-Kymani Gordon this season.

The 21-year-old attacker has started all four of the U’s games in League Two, this season.

“He had a really good loan at Carlisle and helped them get promoted, beating Stockport at Wembley," added Cowley.

“He played a big part in the back end of that season.

“Last year, he went to Cambridge and then finished at Wimbledon.

“He’s a boy that’s got real pace.

“So many attacking players want to go to the ball; not so many of them want to stretch the pitch and run in behind.

“JK wants to do that, likes doing that and against the ball, he’s got a little bit of grit and fight.

“Nicky and I were watching his clips and we both said the same thing: whenever he goes into contact with defenders, they end up on the floor.

“He’s got a little bit of South London in him, I like him.”
