THE waiting is almost over, as Colchester Rugby Club’s first team make their much-anticipated debut in National League 2 this weekend with a trip to Canterbury (kick-off 3pm), writes EDWARD MARRIAGE.

The club’s coaches, committee, back-room staff and players have been working flat out since gaining promotion in the spring to prepare the team to play in what will be the highest level in the club’s 100-year history.

“We’ve had a really good pre-season,” said head coach Craig Burrows, who gives particular credit to new strength and conditioning coach Matt Hughes.

“When you’re well prepared conditionally then the job on the field is going to be easier for us.”

The side which takes the field on Saturday is likely to include a number of unfamiliar faces after Craig’s recruitment drive over the summer, with the hunt for new players continuing even as the season starts.

“We’ve got a good squad. It may take a little time for us to gel, but I think things are looking good”.

Canterbury will be challenging first opponents having finished last season in seventh place in National 2 East and the Kent side have strengthened their squad in the summer.

“We’ve just got to go out there and believe in ourselves, have faith in what we’ve been working on and trust in our structures.”

There’s a season to savour too for The Ravens, who also gained promotion last term.

The 2s make their debut in Eastern Counties 1 with a home match against familiar opponents Newmarket (kick-off 3pm).

The Suffolk side were promoted alongside The Ravens, and while Newmarket triumphed at home in the penultimate game of last season, the 2s convincingly won 41-14 on the 4G pitch earlier in the campaign.

“With a new season comes new challenges,” says head coach Charlie Shepherd.

“The squad has been bolstered by some returning players and fresh faces, setting up what should be a feisty season filled with first team opponents and big clubs.”

A reminder that entry to Ravens matches is free of charge for members and non-members.

The 4s’ league match at home to Aldburgh has been conceded by the Suffolk side, who can’t raise a team.

Club officials are now trying to find alternative opposition.
